The mental sticky note
Working memory helps you retain the beginning of a sentence while reaching the end, remember why you entered a room, follow multi-step instructions and keep a goal active while distractions appear.
When the sticky note falls off
- Walking somewhere and forgetting why.
- Losing a thought while waiting to speak.
- Missing steps in verbal instructions.
- Opening a browser tab and forgetting what you intended to search for.
- Needing to re-check information that was just read.
Put memory into the environment
Write things down before they have a chance to disappear. Keep important objects visible and consistent. Prefer written follow-ups for multi-step requests. Checklists are not cheating; they are extra working memory that happens to live outside your head.
