Activation & Reward

Motivation.

A task can matter deeply while still being difficult to begin. With ADHD, activation is often influenced by interest, novelty, challenge, urgency and how immediate the reward feels.

Motivation Is Not Morality

Difficulty starting a low-interest task is not proof that someone is lazy or does not care. Wanting an outcome and being able to activate for the steps needed to reach it are not always the same thing.

What Can Switch It On

Interest, novelty, competition, challenge, urgency and immediate consequences can make a task easier to engage with. This helps explain why somebody may focus intensely on a difficult problem they enjoy yet struggle to begin a short routine task. The pattern is about regulation, not a lack of effort or values.

Lower The Starting Cost

  • Make the first action extremely small and specific.
  • Add novelty through a different location, format or method.
  • Work alongside another person for gentle accountability.
  • Bring some reward closer to the task instead of relying only on a distant outcome.
  • Use a short starting timer: the goal is to begin, not promise a long session.
  • Reduce setup steps so the useful action is the easiest available action.
